Recycling Education Programs
Educational Programs offered for the Community
One of the main ways the Solid Waste Management Districts of Indiana helps to reduce the amount of waste going to final disposal (landfills and incinerators) is through education.
These presentations may be requested by teachers of students K-6, as-well-as businesses, clubs and organizations throughout Randolph County. To speak to someone about setting up a presentation please call the SWMD Education Coordinator at 1-765-584-9816.

2012 School Age Education Presentations (for teachers and clubs)
Recycling (The 3 R’s)
- “Tons of Trash”—Intro to recycling.
- What is Recycling-define concept of recycling and develop a concept of how recycling occurs.
- We Can Recycle and Reuse-Understanding difference in recycling and reuse.
- The Little Red Hen-story adaptation to show recycling as a team effort.
- “Plastic Parade”—Class activity. Class will need to bring in plastic containers of all different kinds for this activity. A letter for parents, asking that each child bring in 5 plastic containers will be provided for each teacher.
- The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle-story time.
- “Over-packaging”—Class activity. RCSWMD will provide popcorn for the class.
- “Let’s Get it Started”—what you need to know to start recycling at home or in the classroom.
- “Paper People”—Students will learn about why they should recycle paper.
- My Life as a Tree, story and activity.
- Are Juice boxes recyclable, activity.
- Save the trees, activity initiation, will need to be continued by students and teacher for 1 week.
Litter
- “What is Litter”
- Intro to litter and what can be done.
- “How Much Garbage is in Our Lunch” (Litter Less Lunch)
- Students will need to bring their own lunch preferably w/ washable utensils, food storage dishes, a washable napkin and reusable bags. The RCSWMD with provide reusable cups for each student, soda, milk and/or juice, and dessert.
- Will provide each participating teacher with a letter to send home to parents telling them about and asking for their helping packing a “Waste Free Lunch” for their child.
- “Litter Detectives”
- Students will leave class room in small groups to collect litter from various areas around school. Collections will be brought back to class room and analyzed.
Landfills
- Students will learn what options exist for dealing with trash, the basic components of a landfill; consider problems associated with landfills, and build and edible representation of a landfill. (Please let me know if you have student who are allergic to nuts or coconut) Supplies for edible landfill will be provided by the RCSWMD. (Group of 4-5 work well for edible landfill)
- Activity to teach students about leaching landfills.
Composting
- “Let’s Get Yucky”
- Introduction to worm composting. This lesson involves live worms!! The RCSWMD will provide fresh fruit for the students.
- “Warming up to Worms”
Household Hazardous Waste
- “What’s so Hazardous about Hazardous Waste”
- Intro to hazardous waste
- Identifying and understanding hazards
- Reading labels, using products, proper disposal
- Buying the right amount, how to choose, handle and dispose of hazardous materials
- Proper disposal

- “Home Recycling—What you need to know”—workshop or presentation
- Recycling in Randolph County, what we need from the community.
- How to set up home recycling programs.
- “Reclaim Your Day”—workshop or presentation
- Information on how to recycle using less time.
- “Packaging”—workshop or presentation
- How to shop greener. (looking for items made from recycled materials or that can be recycled)
- “Let’s Limit Junk-Mail”—workshop
- Information to minimize the amount of junk mail being received in homes.
Litter
- “What is Litter”—presentation
- Intro to litter and what can be done.
- “How Much Garbage is in Our Lunch”—workshop or presentation
- Employees or members will need to bring their own lunch preferably w/ washable utensils, food storage dishes, a washable napkin and reusable bags. The RCSWMD with provide reusable cups for each adult, soda, milk and/or juice, and dessert.

(Edible landfill does contain nuts and coconut) Supplies for edible landfill will be provided by the RCSWMD. (Group of 4-5 work well for edible landfill)
